Archaeological excavations of the ruins of the Royal castle of Koenigsberg
Order, later the Royal castle was founded in 1255 by the Bohemian king Ottokar II Przemysl. To the XIV century, the castle consisted of a house of the convent, separated from the outer ward by an inner moat, and defended by four walls with towers, and the outer moat.
From 1457 the castle became the residence of the Grand master of the German order. In 1579-1594 G. G. – construction of the Western wing of the castle with the Church and hall Muscovites. In 1697 the castle take Great Embassy of Peter I. in 1701 – in the castle Church the coronation of the first Prussian king Frederick I. In the period from 1758 till 1762 during the Seven years ‘ war, the castle became the residence of Russian governors, including the Governor-General Vasily Suvorov. In the winter of 1760 – 1761, stay in the castle of Alexander Suvorov.
In 1807, during the Napoleonic period the company stay in the castle of Napoleon Bonaparte, and later Alexander II.
Since 1925 the castle accommodation in the East Prussian provincial Museum, later the Museum “Prussia”. The Museum had unique collections of archaeology, Ethnography, works of königsberg artisans, religious art. There was also an archive, library, art gallery.
A significant portion of the collection is currently in the collections of the Kaliningrad regional history and art Museum.
In the period from 1959 till 1976 the ruins of the Royal castle(the castle was on fire in August 1944 during a RAID by British aircraft) were finally demolished and in their place is the square “Central”.
From 2001 to 2005 on the territory of the square by employees of the Kaliningrad regional art Museum and Baltic expedition IA RAS, with the financial support of the magazine “der Spiegel” (Hamburg, Germany), Mary of the city, the Department of culture of administration of the region, archaeological excavations are made.
By July 2005 uncovered the foundations of the main tower, excavated basement of the West wing (about 750 sqm).
The Department of culture of administration of the region, with the support of the Federal Agency for culture and cinematography will be created on the site of the Museum under the open sky with the subsequent preservation of the ruins.
There are currently viewing, demonstration area with exhibition of finds and stands for display of illustrative materials on the history of the castle.
The archaeological excavations a large collection of archaeological and historical materials (more than 5 thousand units), from the collections of KOHM. The most interesting stone core of the fourteenth century, swords, spearheads and Darts, knives XIV – XIX C. C. details of the interiors, household items, decorations of the XIV – early XX V. V. Sensational discovery of a collection of ritual items – 11 pieces in box, silver, gold and other metals of the XVII – XVIII century, and possibly belonged to the court astrologer. Currently, excavations are ongoing.
