During the restoration of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral in Pereslavl-Zalessky researchers found on its walls are some ancient graffiti, including a unique inscription of the XII century — a message about the assassination of Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky and a list of his killers, some of which were previously not known.
The unique inscription, which according to the press service of the Institute of archaeology RAS. turned out to be the oldest dated manuscripts of North-Eastern Russia. Ancient graffiti found and studied occupy a special place among Moscow: Professor of the Higher school of economy Alexey Gippius and fellow of the Institute of Slavic studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences Savva Mikheev.
Restoration works on the external walls of the Cathedral, built in 1157, were launched in summer 2015. This inscription and the other was nearly destroyed during the restoration. However, the scientific staff of the Pereslavl-Zalessky Museum-reserve has insisted that the walls of the Cathedral were washed with pressurized water and not cleaned with an abrasive as originally envisaged.
“The inscription on its value will be included in the top ten most important ancient inscriptions. It is a unique monument of Vladimir official epigraphs-Suzdalskaya fixing the act of Church curses the murderers of Prince Vladimir”, — says Alexei Gippius.
After one successful campaigns on the Volga Bulgaria Andrey Bogolyubsky was murdered by conspirators from among his entourage, on 29 June 1174. The conspiracy allegedly arose after the decision of the Prince was executed by the brother of his wife. After the murders began the distemper, which put an end to the younger brother of Andrei Bogolyubsky, Vsevolod the Big Nest, who ordered the murderers to be executed.
The inscription murder is exactly in the middle South of the apse of the Cathedral. It is made in two columns, within in an overarching framework with a cross on top.
In the right column reads: “June 29 there was the murdered Prince Andrei with his Probka (servants), new eternal memory and SIM everlasting punishment”. Further text is unreadable. According to Alexei Gippius, the phrase “inhibiting (i.e. the Prince) eternal memory, and mind these (the conspirators) vcna flour” suggests that the inscription was made after the execution of the conspirators.
The left column displays a list of killers, where there were about 20 names. The three first of the name known in the annals of is sons-in-law Peter and Yakima kuchkovichi and the Prince’s housekeeper Ambala. Then a significant portion of the text is lost, and in the end there are three names, which were not previously known: the YWCA, Petra and Stirat. Last name may be a nickname derived from the word “Styr” (helm, steering paddle). The list ends with the words: “si essence of the assassin of Grand Duke Andrew, Yes will be damned”. The end of the column is not read.
“The murder of the Prince is one of the most dramatic and mysterious events of the second half of the 12th century. We can assume that this event is the result of sharp conflicts among the political elite of the Vladimir-Suzdal land. However, the details of these conflicts is unknown to us. The opportunity to receive new event data 1174, known to us by the chronicle story, — quite a windfall,” said the Director of the Institute of archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, whose members are also involved in the study of the Cathedral, academician Nikolai Makarov.
