Larnaca which we know now wasn’t always Larnaca. Around the 12th century BC there was built the important ancient city-Kingdom of Kition. Kition was one of the centres of Phoenician and Mycenaean civilizations. The Mycenaean Greeks had built a huge wall and the complex of five temple, including the temple of the goddess of fertility Estate. After leaving Kition, the Mycenaeans went into decline and then revived with the arrival of Phoenicians on the island. The Phoenicians brought with them a developed craft, Maritime Commerce and their rich culture. Entire trading ships began to arrive in the harbour of Kition with the goods and leave with copper. After several centuries of reign island was conquered first the Persians and then Alexander the great himself.
In the 7th century Kition was almost destroyed by the raids of Arabs. And with the arrival of merchants from Genoa city was again transformed. Since the purpose of merchants was the extraction of salt from Salt lakes Kition was renamed Salina . But the name Larnaca, the town got during the reign of the Ottoman Empire. Archaeologist – a scientist who has been studying the past of mankind on the material sources, engaged in archaeology (archeo (archios) – and ancient Greek. lygos is the word, the doctrine).
Archaeology is a historical discipline, studying the material sources of historical past of mankind.
Material sources are tools of production and established with their help, material goods: buildings, weapons, jewelry, dishes, artwork — everything is a result of employment rights. Material sources, unlike writing, does not contain a direct narrative of historical events, and based on these historical findings are the result of scientific reconstruction. Considerable originality of material sources has necessitated the study of their experts-archaeologists, who excavate archaeological sites, investigate and publish findings and results of the excavations, restore that data on the historical past of mankind. A special value of archaeology is to study the eras when there was more writing in General, or the history of those peoples, whose writing was not in later historic times. Continue reading
In the archaeological Museum of Tigranakert in Nagorno Karabakh opened the exhibition of artifacts discovered during the excavation of a barrow near the village of nor Haykajour Markerscase district.
The exhibition features more than 30 exhibits, Dating from the ninth-eighth centuries BC: ceramic vessels, jewelry, bronze parts of a belt, gold jewelry in the form of animals, detail of the tomb, the iron weapon, the wooden parts of the staff, the correspondent of the “Caucasian knot”.
Part of the findings is being reviewed in Armenia, because the exact numbers will be known after all laboratory examinations, told the correspondent of “Caucasian knot” in the Department of tourism and historical environment protection of the Ministry of economy of Nagorno-Karabakh.
For excavations to State service of protection of the historic environment has invited archaeologists from Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia. The expedition included four archaeologist and a research group of seven experts, told the “Caucasian knot” at the Ministry of economy of the unrecognized Republic. Continue reading
